The Home Insurance Claims Process

Filing a home claim is something most homeowners do only a few times in their life. Knowing the road map ahead removes a lot of the stress.

Step 1 — Report the loss

Your claim is opened with the carrier and assigned a claim number. Keep that number handy for every conversation that follows.

Step 2 — Adjuster review

An adjuster inspects the damage, reviews your documentation, and applies your policy language to determine what is covered.

Step 3 — Settlement and repairs

Once coverage is confirmed, the carrier issues payment (often in stages) so repairs can begin. Your deductible applies, and large losses may involve a mortgage company endorsing the check.
