New to Ruskin? Your First-Month Insurance Checklist
I meet new South Shore residents every week, usually from the Midwest or the Northeast, and they are almost always surprised by two things: how different Florida insurance is, and how quickly the state expects you to get compliant. Here is the checklist I hand out, in the order it should happen.
Week one: vehicles
Florida requires you to obtain a Florida driver license and register your vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency, and your vehicle must be insured with a Florida policy carrying at least $10,000 PIP and $10,000 property damage liability before registration.
Do not let your prior policy lapse during the transition. Florida tracks insurance electronically, and a gap can suspend your registration and license and create a reinstatement fee.
Week two: the home
Your closing likely required homeowners coverage, but review it now that the rush is over. Confirm the dwelling limit reflects rebuild cost, check whether the roof is covered at replacement cost or actual cash value, and find your hurricane deductible in dollars.
Then get a flood quote regardless of your zone. If you are new here, the 30-day waiting period is the detail to know — buy it before you need it, not when a storm is named.
Weeks three and four: everything else
Update your life insurance beneficiaries and confirm coverage still matches your new mortgage and cost of living. Ask about umbrella coverage, which is inexpensive and increasingly relevant with Florida's traffic and uninsured driver rate.
If you brought a boat, RV, motorcycle, or golf cart with you, each of those needs its own review under Florida rules. And bundle where it makes sense — the multi-policy discount is the largest single credit most households can get. Come see me and we will knock this out in one sitting.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How long do I have to get Florida insurance after moving?
- You must obtain a Florida driver license and register your vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency, and Florida auto coverage must be in place before you can register a vehicle.
- Why is Florida homeowners insurance so different from other states?
- Florida policies include a separate percentage hurricane deductible, frequently apply actual cash value to older roofs, exclude flood entirely, and price heavily on roof age and wind mitigation features.
- Do I need flood insurance if my new Ruskin home is not in a flood zone?
- It is not required, but South Shore's low elevation and heavy rainfall make it worth quoting. Preferred-risk policies for low-risk zones are typically inexpensive.
- Can I keep my out-of-state auto insurance policy in Florida?
- No. Once you establish Florida residency you need a Florida policy that meets state requirements, including Personal Injury Protection.
