Holiday Season in South Shore: Travel, Packages, and Party Liability

Chaz Toomey — The Toomey Group Insurance 2 min read

November and December are the busiest and most distracted weeks on Florida roads, and they also bring a set of risks people never think of as insurance issues at all. Every year around Thanksgiving I run through this short list with clients so the season stays enjoyable.

Driving in the busiest weeks of the year

Holiday travel means more cars, more out-of-state drivers unfamiliar with our roads, and more impaired driving late at night. If you are renting a car for a trip, check whether your auto policy extends coverage and what your credit card provides before buying the counter product.

If you are driving to see family out of state, your policy follows you throughout the United States and Canada, but Mexico requires separate coverage.

Packages, decorations, and the porch

Package theft is covered under homeowners or renters personal property coverage, but the loss is often below your deductible, which makes filing impractical. Delivery lockers, in-garage delivery, and required signatures are the better answer.

Decorations create their own exposures — ladder falls, overloaded circuits, and dry greenery near heat. Liability coverage responds if a guest is hurt, but prevention is cheaper than a claim.

Hosting and social host liability

If you host a party and serve alcohol, understand that Florida law generally limits social host liability but does create exposure when serving minors or a person known to be habitually addicted. Your homeowners liability and, better yet, an umbrella policy provide the financial backstop.

One more item: if you received expensive gifts — jewelry, watches, cameras, firearms, musical instruments — call me in January. Those categories carry sublimits on a standard policy and often need to be scheduled to be fully covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does homeowners insurance cover stolen packages?
Yes, package theft generally falls under personal property coverage, though the value is often less than the deductible, which makes filing a claim impractical for most porch thefts.
Am I covered driving a rental car during holiday travel?
Most personal auto policies extend liability and physical damage coverage to rental cars in the United States, and many credit cards add secondary coverage. Confirm details before declining the rental counter waiver.
Do I need to schedule expensive holiday gifts on my policy?
Often yes. Jewelry, watches, firearms, and collectibles carry low sublimits under standard homeowners policies, and scheduling them provides full value coverage with typically no deductible.
Am I liable if a guest is injured at my holiday party?
Your homeowners liability coverage responds to guest injuries, subject to your limits. An umbrella policy adds a larger layer of protection at a relatively low cost.
