Golf Carts and Low-Speed Vehicles in Sun City Center: What Your Policy Says

Chaz Toomey — The Toomey Group Insurance 2 min read

Sun City Center and Kings Point may have more golf carts per capita than anywhere in Florida, and they are not just for the course — they are how people get to the grocery store, the clubhouse, and dinner. That everyday use is exactly where coverage gets complicated, because insurance treats a golf cart very differently depending on where and how it is driven.

Golf cart vs. low-speed vehicle

Under Florida law, a golf cart is limited to about 20 miles per hour and has restricted road use. A low-speed vehicle tops out around 25 miles per hour, must have safety equipment like headlights, seat belts, and a VIN, and must be titled, registered, and insured with at least PIP and property damage liability, just like a car.

Many carts in our communities have been upgraded enough that they legally qualify as low-speed vehicles. If yours has, the registration and insurance requirements changed with it.

What a homeowners policy really covers

Homeowners policies typically provide limited liability coverage for a golf cart used on the golf course or within the residential community, and often provide little or no physical damage coverage for the cart itself. Theft coverage may be limited by personal property sublimits.

Use it on a public road, or let a guest drive it, and the coverage picture gets thin quickly. Carts are stolen, damaged, and involved in injury accidents more often than people expect.

The straightforward fix

A standalone golf cart or low-speed vehicle policy is inexpensive and provides real liability limits, physical damage coverage including theft, and often medical payments and uninsured motorist coverage.

Given how much time our neighbors spend in these vehicles, I think it is one of the better values in a Sun City Center household budget. Tell me the make, model, and top speed and I will tell you exactly which category yours falls into.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does homeowners insurance cover a golf cart in Florida?
Usually only in limited ways — liability while used on the golf course or within the residential community, with little or no coverage for damage to the cart itself. Public road use is generally excluded.
Is golf cart insurance required in Sun City Center?
Standard golf carts are not required to be insured by the state, but low-speed vehicles must be titled, registered, and carry PIP and property damage liability. Many community associations also impose their own requirements.
What is the difference between a golf cart and a low-speed vehicle?
Speed and equipment. A golf cart is limited to about 20 miles per hour with restricted road use, while a low-speed vehicle reaches up to 25 miles per hour, carries a VIN and safety equipment, and must be registered and insured.
Does golf cart insurance cover theft?
A dedicated golf cart policy can include comprehensive coverage for theft and vandalism. Homeowners personal property coverage often applies sublimits that fall well short of the cart's value.
