Driving for Rideshare or Delivery? Your Personal Auto Policy Has a Hole

Chaz Toomey — The Toomey Group Insurance 2 min read

Plenty of people around South Shore drive for a rideshare or delivery app, full time or for extra income. Almost all of them assume the app's insurance handles everything. It does not, and the gap sits exactly where most drivers spend their time.

The three periods

Period one is app on, waiting for a request — the app typically provides only limited liability and no coverage for damage to your own vehicle. Period two is en route to a pickup, and period three is passenger or order aboard; both usually carry higher limits and some physical damage coverage subject to a large deductible.

Your personal auto policy generally excludes all three, because driving for hire is a commercial activity.

Adding a rideshare endorsement

Most carriers writing in Florida offer a rideshare or ride-hailing endorsement that extends your personal policy through period one and coordinates with the app's coverage in periods two and three.

It is inexpensive compared with a commercial auto policy and it keeps your collision and comprehensive intact while the app is on.

Delivery is not always the same as rideshare

Food and package delivery is underwritten differently by some carriers, and courier work for a business often requires commercial auto entirely. Say specifically what you deliver and for whom.

Not disclosing the activity risks a denied claim and a canceled policy at the worst time. Tell me which apps you run and I will confirm the correct endorsement or policy for each.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my personal auto policy cover rideshare driving?
Generally no. Personal policies exclude driving for hire, which is why a rideshare endorsement or commercial policy is needed.
What is the rideshare coverage gap?
The time when the app is on and you are waiting for a request. App-provided coverage is limited then, and your personal policy typically does not apply.
Is delivery driving covered the same as rideshare?
Not always. Some carriers treat food and package delivery differently, and courier work often requires a commercial auto policy.
How much does a rideshare endorsement cost?
It is typically a modest addition to your existing premium, far less than a standalone commercial auto policy.
