Boat Insurance for Apollo Beach and the Little Manatee: What Owners Miss

Chaz Toomey — The Toomey Group Insurance 2 min read

Between Apollo Beach, the Little Manatee River, and the run out to the bay, a lot of my clients spend their weekends on the water. Boat insurance is one of those products where the differences between policies are large and nearly invisible on a price comparison. These are the terms I always read out loud before someone signs.

The core coverages

Hull coverage protects the boat itself, ideally on an agreed value basis rather than actual cash value so depreciation does not gut a total loss settlement. Liability covers injury or damage you cause to others, which matters enormously in crowded weekend waters.

Medical payments, uninsured boater coverage, and coverage for your trailer and personal effects round out a typical policy. Check the limits on personal effects if you carry electronics or fishing gear of real value.

The Florida-specific terms

Fuel spill and wreck removal liability can be enormous obligations after a sinking, and they are governed by federal law regardless of the boat's value. Make sure your policy includes meaningful limits.

Hurricane haul-out coverage reimburses part of the cost to move your boat to safety when a named storm approaches — usually up to a set dollar amount. Also check your navigational limits and whether the policy has a lay-up or named windstorm restriction during storm season.

Where homeowners coverage falls short

Homeowners policies sometimes extend limited coverage to very small boats with low horsepower, but the limits are small and liability coverage on the water is typically restricted or excluded.

If you own anything beyond a kayak or small jon boat, a dedicated policy is the right call. Send me the specs and where you keep it, and I will walk through the terms with you line by line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is boat insurance required in Florida?
Florida does not require boat insurance for most recreational vessels, but marinas, lenders, and some waterways require proof of coverage, and liability exposure on the water is significant.
Does homeowners insurance cover my boat?
Only in limited cases — typically small, low-horsepower boats with modest coverage limits and restricted liability. Larger boats and any meaningful liability protection require a dedicated marine policy.
What is hurricane haul-out coverage?
It reimburses part of the cost to haul, move, or secure your vessel when a named storm threatens, usually up to a stated limit. It is one of the most valuable features for Tampa Bay boat owners.
What is agreed value versus actual cash value on a boat policy?
Agreed value pays a set amount you and the insurer establish at policy issue in a total loss. Actual cash value subtracts depreciation, which can dramatically reduce the settlement on an older vessel.
