General Liability vs. Professional Liability: Which Does Your Business Need?

Chaz Toomey — The Toomey Group Insurance 2 min read

Two business owners sat in my office last month with the same problem: each had one liability policy and assumed it covered everything. One was a contractor, one was a consultant, and both were half right. Here is how to tell what your Florida business actually needs.

General liability: the physical world

General liability covers bodily injury and property damage your business causes to others — a customer slips in your lobby, your employee breaks a client's window, your sign falls on a car. It also covers advertising injury like libel and slander.

Almost every business needs it. Landlords require it, clients demand certificates of it, and one uninsured claim can end a small business.

Professional liability: the advice world

Professional liability — also called errors and omissions — covers financial harm caused by your services: bad advice, a missed deadline, a design error, a bookkeeping mistake. No one has to be physically hurt for this claim to cost six figures.

Accountants, real estate agents, insurance agents, consultants, IT firms, and anyone who gives advice or delivers professional work needs this coverage. General liability specifically excludes it.

Many businesses genuinely need both

A home inspector needs professional liability for a missed roof defect and general liability for knocking a ladder through the client's window. The policies complement each other; neither substitutes for the other.

The good news: for many small operations, both coverages together cost less than owners expect. Tell me what your business actually does day to day and I will map the right combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is professional liability required in Florida?
Not by law for most professions, but contracts and licensing boards often require it, and clients increasingly demand proof before signing.
What does a BOP include?
A business owner's policy bundles general liability with commercial property coverage — but professional liability is almost always a separate policy or endorsement.
How much does professional liability cost?
Low-risk consultants can start around $500 a year; higher-risk professions pay more. Revenue, claims history, and contract size drive the price.
