General Liability Insurance for Florida Small Businesses
Every week a South Shore contractor or shop owner calls me because a customer asked for a certificate of insurance. That request is usually the start of a longer conversation about what the policy really does.
What general liability covers
It responds to third-party bodily injury, third-party property damage, and personal and advertising injury claims — a customer slipping in your shop, your crew cracking a homeowner's tile, or a disputed advertising claim.
It also pays defense costs, which often exceed the settlement in small claims. That defense benefit is the part owners undervalue most.
What it does not cover
It excludes damage to your own work product, employee injuries, professional advice errors, auto accidents, and cyber incidents. Those need workers' compensation, professional liability, commercial auto, and cyber policies respectively.
Tools and equipment are not covered either. Inland marine coverage handles those, on the job site and in transit.
Typical limits and certificates
Most Florida small businesses carry $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate because that is what commercial clients and general contractors require in contracts.
Read the contract before you buy. Additional insured status, waiver of subrogation, and primary and non-contributory wording all change what your agent needs to issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need general liability if I work alone?
- If you enter customer property or serve the public, yes. Sole proprietors face the same third-party claims as larger firms.
- Is a business owners policy better?
- A BOP packages general liability with commercial property at a lower combined cost and fits most shops, offices, and small contractors.
- How fast can I get a certificate of insurance?
- Usually the same day once the policy is bound. Send me the contract requirements and I can issue it directly.
